Is Sword Art Online: Extra Edition just a recap? ›

Most of the episode is a recap with some swimsuit scenes mixed in, while the remaining 20 minutes of the episode shows an original new story about the characters' quest in the Undersea Temple of ALfheim Online.

There is very little worth watching here except for around 2o minutes near the end of the film. The film is really just an extended recap episode and not that great of one at that. Sure the content that is rehashed is the best of the series, but why would you watch clips of it when you could just watch the whole thing.

The answer is yes. All three movies, along with the upcoming sequel, were written by the original writer of the Sword Art Online Series, Reki Kawahara. That means it fulfilled the most important and obvious condition for a story to be a canon. The first movie, Sword Art Online: Extra Edition, was a compilation movie.

On the other hand, those who are familiar with the first series can skip this movie and not miss anything. It's a synopsis of the previous anime season condensed into about an hour and a half.
