BABSON PARK, Mass. - Emerson College visited Babson College for a Saturday afternoon NEWMAC men's lacrosse matchup. The Beavers entered the game as the #14 team in the country per the most recent USILA poll, and they backed it up by defeating Emerson 15-6. Emerson moves to 6-7 (1-3 NEWMAC) on the season while Babson improves to 10-2 (4-0 NEWMAC).
Emerson got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they were shut out by their hosts. Babson, on the other hand, had no problem scoring as they put five in by the end of the second quarter. Jared Rainville and Bennett Smith each scored two in the quarter, with Rainville's second being his 41st of the season. Babson scored again to start the second quarter and go up 6-0, but Emerson got on the board quickly afterward as Alex Menendez scored with 5:39 remaining to make the score 6-1. Jack Burns would score later on an assist by Burk Swan for his 48th of the season to cut into the Beaver lead, but Babson's Luke Wang would get one back to put his team up 7-2 going into halftime.
Rainville started the scoring in the second half, putting Babson up 8-2 with 11:33 remaining. Emerson would soon get the deficit down to four, as Burns scored again off an assist by Pierce Eldredge at 8:17 and Nicholas Fulgione scored his 31st of the season off an assist by Swan at 7:04. Babson would answer with three straight goals extend their lead to 11-4 with 3:52 left in the quarter. Zachary Stern-Hayes would score unassisted for Emerson at the 0:55 mark, but Jared Rainville's fifth goal of the game with 0:14 left put Babson up 12-5 heading into the final quarter of play.
Babson got on the board almost immediately in the fourth, as Rainville scored again just 37 seconds in at 14:23. Emerson wouldn't score in the quarter until about halfway through, as Jack O'Rourke scored unassisted at 7:36. A delay of game face-off violation byEmerson gave Babson a man-up opportunity, and they would take immediate advantage of it as Smith scored at 7:20 on an assist by Toper Bower. Those in attendance may have experienced immediate deja vu as Emerson was called for another delay of game faceoff violation, causing another man-up opportunity that allowedSmith to score again off an assist by Bower at 6:45. This would prove to be the final goal of the game as Babson won 15-6.
Burns led the way for Emerson with two goals, and Swan tallied two assists. Four other Emerson players scored in the contest. Malcolm McGrath played the entire game in goal for the Lions, tallying17 saves. Babson was led on offense by Rainville, who had six goals and an assist along with a caused turnover. Smith also had a productive night, scoring four times and assisting once while Bower had five assists and a caused turnover. Alex Fascilla played all 60 minutes in goal for Babson and recorded 11 saves.
NEXT UP: Men's lacrosse hosts MIT for a 7:00 p.m. game next Saturday, April 13th. MIT is 3-8 (2-2 NEWMAC), with their most recent result being a 16-3 win over Coast Guard.
