Ingredients For Chickpea Fritters

Easy Vegan Chickpea Patties Recipe (2)

To make these simple chickpea fritters, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Chickpeas: you can use either canned chickpeas for this recipe or you can soak and cook your own. If using canned ones then one can is sufficient which would be equal to about 1 1/1 cup of cooked chickpeas
  • Flour: I like to use whole grain flour (whole wheat flour) in fritter recipes, but you can pretty much use any flour of choice - oat flour, chickpea flour or even some buckwheat flour will all do the trick
  • Onion: it's best to use a regular red onion, but you can also use yellow onion, spring onions, shallots or even onion powder
  • Garlic: a garlic clove adds to the whole aroma and taste of this chickpea patty recipe but if you don't have one, just add some garlic powder
  • Carrots: if using organic carrots (highly recommended) leave the skin on as it contains the most nutrients
  • Fresh parsley: there is nothing better than fresh parsley but if you don't have any, dry parsley will do
  • Olive oil: I use olive oil for frying them but you can also bake them on ghee butter or another plant-based oil
  • Breadcrumbs: to ensure a crispy texture of the patties, I like to coat them in breadcrumbs prior to baking or frying but this can be skipped

How To Store Leftover Patties

In case you end up with some leftover patties (highly unlikely), you can always store them in an airtight container in the fridge and use within 3 days.

If you want to make a larger amount of the patties and save for later, then I recommend freezing them before baking, separately on a baking sheet.

Then once each is frozen, transfer to a silicone bag so it uses less space in the freezer.

What's the difference between garbanzo beans and chickpeas? ›

The honest answer—there's no difference between chickpeas and garbanzo beans. They're just two (of many) different names for the same type of pulse. (Pulses are basically seeds of legume plants.) The word chickpea doesn't come from chickens at all—it's an evolution of the plant's Latin name, cicer arietinum.

What is the difference between garbanzo flour and chickpea? ›

Besan flour, gram flour, and garbanzo bean flour are all chickpea flours; they're just made from different varieties of chickpeas. Chickpea flour or garbanzo bean flour is milled using whole white chickpeas (garbanzo beans). Besan or gram flour is made by grinding split brown chickpeas (chana dal) into a fine powder.

How do you cook chickpeas so they don't fall apart? ›

To control the texture of your chickpeas, adjust the lid while simmering. For firmer beans that hold their shape well, simmer with the lid completely off. These are great for bean salads and vegetarian chili. For softer, creamier beans that easily break down, simmer with the lid slightly ajar.

How to get veggie burgers to stay together? ›

Adding flour or oats can help the burgers stick together, without using eggs. Mash everything together well. The more pulverized the veggie burger mixture gets, the better the patties will stick together. (But don't puree them, or the final texture will be off.)

What can I put in my burgers so they don't fall apart? ›

The very low fat content of the hamburger probably has something to do with it, but there are a couple of tricks you can use: Add 1 egg yolk per pound of hamburger. It won't add appreciably to the fat content and will bind the meat beautifully.

How do you keep burgers from crumbling? ›

watch the edges, and don't flip them until the edges are browning. also pay attention to the way you shape your burgers. if they're much thicker in the middle than they are on the edges, the middle will still be loose while the edges of the burger are firm. and then you have the fall-apart thing happening.
