After your academic advising sessions, you will be able to:
- Formulate a degree plan to achieve your educational and career goals
- Build a class schedule with your educational path and future semesters in mind
- Understand the general process of how to transfer to and from academic institutions outside of San Jac
- Learn how career assessment tools are used in educational and career planning
- Understand how to locate mental health counseling, social, and community resources
- Understand the impact of college policies within the context of higher education
- Understand the registration, fee payment, and drop schedule
- Develop a general understanding of tuition costs and financial resources and responsibilities

When you sign up for academic advising, your advisor will expect you to:
- Understand certificate and degree requirements
- Become knowledgeable about San Jac resources, policies, and procedures
- Check in with your advisor at least once each semester and participate in appropriate meetings
- Be prepared for your educational planning sessions
- Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or you have a specific concern
- Check your San Jac email and Blackboard account for news and updates
- Check your academic standing and certificate and degree requirements at least once each semester
- Take responsibility for your decisions and actions
- Schedule appointments in advance
You can expect your advisor to:
- Communicate program, certificate, and degree requirements as well as academic policies and procedures
- Support the development of your academic, personal, and career goals
- Assist in developing an educational plan consistent with your goals
- Provide guidance on course selection and registration
- Demonstrate how to use advising tools like My San Jac GPS, SOS, and more
- Provide information on campus and community resources
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA guidelines as appropriate
- Stay up to date on college-wide programs, policies, and procedures
